Where costs creep in is the same place they do everywhere: cabanas, watersports rentals, and specialty food.

The character presence and the dedicated kids' area (Scuttle's Cove) are the real differentiators — this is where Castaway Cay stops being just a nice beach and becomes a Disney-specific value proposition. If you're cruising with young kids, that infrastructure is genuinely hard to replicate at a competitor's private island, and it's the strongest argument for the overall price premium of Disney Cruise Line in the first place.
Where It's Just... a Beach
Strip away the character meet-and-greets and the kids' club, and the physical beach experience — sand, water, loungers — is genuinely comparable to what you'd get on a competitor's private island for meaningfully less overall cruise fare. If the character element isn't a priority for your group, Castaway Cay's premium is harder to justify on the beach day alone.
The beach day itself is good — genuinely good. Whether it's worth the overall price gap versus a competitor's cruise fare is really a question about how much the character infrastructure matters to your group, not about the sand.
