Mark it if you're sailing into Isle of Berk this fall: The Untrainable Dragon closes for a scheduled refurbishment beginning September 15, 2026, and is currently expected to return September 21. That's a roughly one-week window, and it lands squarely in a stretch when a lot of families take advantage of post-summer crowd levels.
Losing it for a week is a bigger deal than a one-week ride closure usually is. The Untrainable Dragon isn't filler entertainment — it's a full-scale stage production with walking dragon puppetry and a flying Toothless, and we've called it the best live show on Universal property. It's also the anchor that makes Isle of Berk work as a half-day land rather than a walk-through. Take it out and the land is three rides and a play area.
If your visit falls in that window, restructure rather than skip. Isle of Berk still holds up on Hiccup's Wing Gliders, Dragon Racer's Rally, and Fyre Drill, and the Viking Training Camp play area buys real time with younger kids. But we'd shift the show slot in your day over to Le Cirque Arcanus in Ministry of Magic — it's the park's other genuine theatrical production, and it does the same job of parking you in air conditioning during the ugliest heat of the afternoon.
One planning note worth repeating: refurbishment return dates are targets, not promises. A September 21 return is what's on the calendar now, and shows do sometimes come back a few days late. If The Untrainable Dragon is a must-do for your party rather than a nice-to-have, build your Epic Universe day for after that first week rather than betting on the reopening date.
